Every Month Matters

Andy Williams is a Bishop Kelley senior and Girl Scout who turned a simple observation into meaningful change in the Tulsa community. More than just an involved student with strong grades, Andy embodies what it means to use one’s gifts, voice, and compassion to serve others.

While volunteering at The Market through Catholic Charities of Eastern Oklahoma during her freshman year, Andy noticed something was almost always missing. Although personal care items occasionally appeared on the shelves, feminine hygiene products were rarely available. She realized many girls and women in the community were going without necessities that are often taken for granted.

“Period poverty is a real issue that keeps girls and women from school and work,” Andy said. “Every month does matter. Girls and women should not have to choose between basic healthcare and food.”

That realization became the foundation for Every Month Matters, a service project Andy originally began to fulfill Girl Scout service hour requirements. What started as an assignment quickly grew into a passion project centered on dignity, awareness, and service.

After speaking with Deacon Bill at Catholic Charities, Andy began organizing donations and spreading awareness about period poverty in Tulsa. Along the way, she faced challenges and reached out to many local organizations for support, often without success. Still, she credits her family, community, and experiences at Bishop Kelley for encouraging her to continue.

“Being a Bishop Kelley student instilled in me a love of service,” Andy said. “That love helped me through the challenges I faced while working on this project.”

As the initiative grew, so did community support. During Fall Homecoming Week this year, Bishop Kelley students donated more than 400 feminine hygiene products to The Market in support of Andy’s mission.

Seeing her school rally behind the project filled Andy with “overwhelming joy.”

Her goal, however, extends far beyond a single donation drive.

“My hope is that Every Month Matters spreads and people continue to make donations,” she said. “Feminine hygiene products are not a luxury. They are a healthcare necessity that no girl or woman should have to be without.”

Andy hopes her project encourages others to recognize that meaningful change often begins with small acts of courage and initiative.

“The hardest part is simply taking the first step,” she said. “But once you do, you may realize how much of an impact one person can really have. The greatest service one can give is their voice with action.”

Because Andy chose to speak up after seeing a need in her community, Every Month Matters has already made a lasting impact-proof that even one person’s willingness to act can create meaningful change.
