2013 Nationals
Ritchie and Brulc Rock at 2013 Nationals

Kelsey Ritchie ‘13 and Audra Brulc ‘13 broke Bishop Kelley records at the National Forensic League Speech and Debate Nationals, held June 16-21, 2013, in Birmingham, Alabama. Not only did both break the top ten in three events, but Kelsey also placed first in an event that is not even offered in Oklahoma competition.

Kelsey became the National Champion for Extemporaneous Commentary and placed seventh in Expository Speaking. Audra placed ninth nationwide in Impromptu Speaking. “We took six students to nationals this year, which is a pretty big delegation from one school,” Coach Megan Schaunaman said. “Winning state (competitions) is all sorts of fun. But on a whole different level, to meet all these kids from hundreds of schools across the country and to have a national champion, is just surreal.”

Kelsey’s win is the first national championship for Bishop Kelley and coaches Schaunaman and Amanda Walker. Also earning a spot in the national competition were Steve Duke, Emma Francois, Matt Marra, and Peter Simmons.

Bishop Kelley’s Speech and Debate students—with coaches Walker, Schaunaman, and Dana Hoagland—are consecutive State Champions and Academic State Champions. Some team members also participated in the Harvard University tournament during the 2012-13 school year.

Congratulations to all!
