Update on Distance Learning and School Calendar

Over the past several weeks, the Bishop Kelley Administration Team has been working closely with the Tulsa Health Department, tracking the latest recommendations that have been issued by the CDC and the guidelines set by both state and city leaders in order to make the most prudent decisions that protect our students, faculty, and staff during this time of COVID-19.

Throughout this process it has remained our hope that at some point we would be able to bring our students back onto campus and honorably close out the current school year.

As we continue to track the future opening of our county, state and city, it has become clear that the possibility of gathering on our campus for classes will not be feasible before the end of the school year.

I would like to share with you how the school is planning to respond to these final days of the school year, summer school and all of the end of the year activities.

Distance Learning: Distance Learning will continue through the end of the year for Bishop Kelley. I am very proud of the ways our teachers and students have transitioned to this sustained way of learning. We are thankful to the 600 plus responses to the recent Parent/Guardian survey regarding Distance Learning, and we are currently preparing a summary of those responses and will soon share them with you; an ad hoc faculty committee has been formed to review Distance Learning best practices after five weeks of implementation.  We remain committed to making this learning experience even more effective for our students.

April 28, 2020 - Special Schedule | Mass of Thanksgiving for Seniors and their Parents/Guardians at 9:00 am:  All seniors and parents/guardians are invited to join Bishop Konderla, Fr. Kastl, and Fr. Duy online at BK TV  and also on the Holy Family Cathedral Facebook page at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 28th for the Mass of Thanksgiving.  Additionally, seniors and their parents/guardians are invited to drive by the top of the “U” Drive Tuesday afternoon between 1:00-2:00 p.m. for a special blessing for the Class of 2020 and their family.  We ask seniors to turn into the U drive, from the north so as to not back up traffic on Hudson to 41st street; we also ask you to remain in your cars while on campus.

Day of Rest or Catch-up: All other students are encouraged to use April 28, 2020 as a day of rest or catching-up.  No classes will be held.

Honors Assembly:  The annual Honors Assembly is being presented each day from April 20 through the end of the year in the Daily Bulletin.

Final Exams: All final exams for the fourth quarter have been cancelled.  Students may be given summative projects or assessments in some classes.

End of School: The final day of Distance Learning will be Tuesday, May 19, 2020. The two days following -- Wednesday, May 20, 2020 and Thursday, May 21, 2020 -- will be voluntary Flex Days during which teachers and students may connect via Google Meets to finish work, complete projects, or get extra help/tutorials.  These Flex Days will follow the schedule:

10:00 a.m. - Noon  Block Two

Thursday, May 21, 2020

8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.  Block Three

Baccalaureate Mass: All seniors and their parents/guardians will celebrate Baccalaureate Mass on June 19, 2020 or July 24, 2020 at a location to be determined, social distancing guidelines permitting.  (For Parents/Guardians and Grandparents only, due to limited seating).  Seniors will receive further instructions as plans are finalized within the Tulsa Health Department guidelines

Graduation:  Graduation for the Bishop Kelley Class of 2020 will be held the morning of Saturday, June 20, 2020 as long as CDC and OHD social distancing protocols are met. If distancing guidelines do not allow, Graduation will then be moved to the morning of Saturday, July 25, 2020.  If the distancing guidelines still do not allow major public ceremonies, Bishop Kelley will broadcast a digital Graduation ceremony at that time.  The two public ceremony options may include limited audience seating.  Final decisions on timing will be communicated to Bishop Kelley families at least a week ahead of time.

Virtual Celebration – Class of 2020: On Saturday, May 23, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., Bishop Kelley will broadcast a Class of 2020 Celebration on BKTV highlighting the seniors and their accomplishments.  Access to the presentation is available through the BKTV tab on the school website.

Prom: The 2020 Prom has been rescheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2020 or Wednesday July 22, 2020, 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. at the Jazz Hall of Fame downtown, depending on CDC and OHD guidelines. Hopefully, social distancing restrictions will be relaxed and a memorable evening will be held. Tickets will be available online June 1, 2020 or July 1, 2020, depending on the allowable date. If CDC and OHD protocols do not allow large gatherings, the prom will be cancelled.  Final decisions on timing will be communicated to Bishop Kelley families at least a week ahead of time.

Book, Uniforms, Chromebook Return: Students return of  classroom books, materials, uniforms, etc, to Bishop Kelley will take place May 21, May 26 and May 27, before grades, diplomas, and transcripts are released. Information regarding the return process will be emailed to families.

BK Athletics: The OSSAA Staff has determined coaches will be permitted to provide activity-specific instruction to their respective students via a virtual platform only. Member-school campuses will remain closed to all activity involving sanctioned sports and training until further notice. Bishop Kelley will continue to monitor this situation and communicate any changes in regard to previously scheduled spring and summer workouts, tryouts, summer leagues, and camps.

May 15, 2020 - DeLaSalle Day: The special schedule for this day will be forthcoming

Summer School:  Under recommendations from the Tulsa Health Department (THD) Bishop Kelley will not be holding traditional summer school classes. A limited number of classes will still be available in a distance learning format. Summer classes that have not been canceled are still open for enrollment.  Final decisions on summer school classes will be made by May 15, 2020.  Any further course cancellations will be communicated to families on May 16, 2020.
